Chapter Eight

Women, Xander thought. You just can’t win with them. Two weeks after he and Bailey had become lovers, and spent part of nearly every night since then together, she was still hell bent on him not getting to know her son. She hadn’t even introduced the two yet. Hell, she wouldn’t even let Xander pick her up at her house. Even that first night, she’d met him at the steakhouse and followed him back to the ranch. They always came to his place, never hers. Bailey always brought her own car, arriving after Seth’s bedtime and leaving a few hours later. Except for the couple of times her parents had kept Seth and she’d stayed with Xander. But she still hadn’t asked Xander to her house, even when the kid was gone. Shit, he was getting a complex.

He shouldn’t complain. He’d accepted her rules, hadn’t he? He enjoyed being with her, either at work or elsewhere. Bailey was smart, challenging and independent, sometimes to a fault. The sex was mind-blowingly good. He had a good thing going. A beautiful woman, great sex, no strings to worry about. It should have been a dream come true.

So why the hell wasn’t it?

Whenever Xander mentioned something, like picking up pizza or hamburgers for all three of them and bringing dinner to her house, she said no. She didn’t use an excuse, she simply said no. How the hell were they supposed to have a relationship if he’d never even met Seth? If she didn’t even want Xander in her house, for God’s sake.

You’re not. Bailey doesn’t want a relationship, remember? She wants simple, no strings, just sex. And instead of being content with that, like he had been with every other woman in his past, Xander was getting more and more pissed off.

But right now he had to deal with the other ornery woman in his life. His mother.

He was still not happy with Lorna over the whole “surprise-guess-who-your-father-is” thing. She should have told Nick and him about their father years ago. They shouldn’t have had to learn that news through Boots Kelly’s crazy-ass will.

What was done was done, though, and she was still his mother and he still loved her, regardless of what he considered to be a severe lapse in judgment. And now Nick had reminded him that Lorna’s birthday was next week and he’d totally forgotten. So here he was at Lavender Dreams, the shop owned by Ariana Wright and Juliette Rossi, the women in his brothers’ lives. There was bound to be something he could send his mother.

The bells jingled when he opened the door. It smelled like flowers, not surprising since they sold lavender based products. Lotions and potions were everywhere, arranged in artsy displays. There were trinkets and doodads, all sorts of things women liked to collect. Maybe he should pick up something for Bailey while he was at it.

There was only one other person in the shop and that was the woman behind the counter, Jasmine Sanchez.
